The Dame: The Funkman Tour

Recently, The Dame played host to The Funkman Tour, which consisted of Del the Funky Homosapien, Mike Relm, Bukue One, and Serendipity Project. The show, which was heavy on hip hop with a side of funk, was the second time I have shot something at The Dame since doing freelance concert photography. I did my research, like usual, and listened to a lot of the music by the various artists. It was easy for me to check out Del’s latest album, since he has it available as a free download online. Below are some sample photos from the show, with a couple shots from each act. You can click the photos to visit that photo’s page on my Flickr.

If you would like to check out all the photos from the show, you can visit the “Del the Funky 05-07-09″ photo collection on my Flickr. I was able to get a lot of high contrast shots which turned out pretty cool. As with the photos from Bang Camaro & Leslie, many had yellow and red tones due to the harsh lighting at the venue. Some I left at those extreme colors, while others I corrected post processing. Shooting the show was pretty intense since the place was packed by the time Del took the stage. I found a spot close to the stage, and set up camp until the whole show was done and over.

I really liked the show from a photography perspective (despite the rough lighting) as well as a music-loving perspective. I like a wide variety of music and have been known to pop in some Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots and other hip hop from time to time, and I can easily say that Del will be added to that list. My thanks goes out to the management and label for allowing me to shoot the entire show, which I always feel privileged to be able to do. Also, thanks to Del the Funky Homosapien, Mike Relm, Bukue One, Serendipity Project, and their DJs and support for putting on a great show. If anyone reading this would like to find out more about Del, you can check out his website on Hieroglyphics (his record label), or stop by his MySpace.
