Buster’s: The Yellow Belts

Two nights ago I went to my second show at Buster’s Billiards and Backroom. The headlining band that night was The Yellow Belts, with Banderas and Accidently on Purpose supporting. I was downtown already shooting a fashion show for work, so after that was over I went straight to Buster’s so that I could catch the opening band. The first band to take the stage was Accidently on Purpose, an indie rock trio hailing from Dayton, Ohio. Below are some of the photos I took during their set. To view all the photos, check out the Accidently on Purpose set on my Flickr.

Accidently on Purpose put on a great show. Their guitarist/singer/front-woman really went all out from her skills with the six string, to her gritty vocals and overall stage presence. She really got the crowd into the music and kept everything moving. That shouldn’t discredit their bassist and drummer though, who each showed off their own unique style and skill set and helped round out the band into a great rock trio. I really enjoyed their set and they set the bar pretty high for the other two bands to follow.

Next to hit the stage was Banderas, a group of six post punk garage rockers from Cincinnati. Below are some of the photos I took during their set. To check out all the shots, visit the Banderas set on my Flickr.

As if not to be outdone, Banderas raised the bar even higher. This explosive sextet tore through their set and really showed off their experience and skill. Both guitarists were excellent at their craft and brought a lot of energy to the stage with various guitar lunges and poses. The bassist and drummer were also very talented, but not quite as outgoing, while the keyboardist put them all to shame by often climbing and performing a Captain Morgan pose on his seat and keys. The most dynamic of all was the singer, who strutted around with an almost Mick Jagger meets Freddy Mercury persona. When everything came together, the music was abrasive, energetic, and really grabbed the attention of everyone.

Finishing out the night was the headliner, The Yellow Belts. Below are photos from their set, with the rest viewable on The Yellow Belts set that can be found on my Flickr.

The Yellow Belts really showed why they were headlining. They had a certain intensity that came through in their music that didn’t require as much theatrics and poses as the other bands had. That being said, the lead singer did dance around the stage, make your blood curdle with his screams, and jumped down into the crowd and belted [no pun intended] out lyrics with fans surrounding him. Perhaps the most hardcore band of the night (as far as vocals are concerned), The Yellow Belts were a great end to an awesome night of rock.

I loved the first show I went to at Buster’s, but this one was even better. I have a feeling that it will only keep getting better from here on out. In the next week alone there are five shows, featuring groups like The Sounds, Blues Traveler, Silversun Pickups, Manchester Orchestra, Cage the Elephant, and more. Should be an awesome [and tiring] week for me. I can’t wait!
