- Shooting Notes:

While visiting places, I like to book a few shoots with local models to take advantage of that city’s locations and to meet some new people from the area. Denver was no different. The first shoot I planned was with a model named Danielle Krogh (MM# 1252471). We were hoping to shoot at some graffiti walls in downtown Denver. I location scouted a couple days before the shoot and managed to find a number of different great locations (including some awesome graffiti walls) within a couple blocks. We met up in the rather chilly weather, and bounced from location to location using a wide variety of outfit variations she brought with her.

It was definitely a ton of fun shooting with Danielle. Not only was she great to work with from a professional standpoint, but she was a lot of fun to hang out with. My thanks definitely goes out to her for putting up with the frigged weather and that might normally postpone a shoot.

- Shooting Notes:

Visiting Denver is like going home for me. Even though I have spent nearly all of my life in Kentucky, I was born in Colorado Spring, CO and have been a Denver Broncos fan as long as I can remember. Having a sister in the area an some holiday time off of work, I decided to spend Turkey Day out in Denver, and naturally brought my camera along. Throughout the week, I snapped off some shots of the buildings near by, as well as some cool graffiti scatted along the brick walls of the suburbs.

In only their second home game of the season (excluding exhibition games), UK players definitely seemed to be getting more and more comfortable with themselves and with each other. There were some very intense plays in this game which provided some nice gems to photograph. John Wall was still sticking out as being the dominant player, while DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe proved they were not to be overlooked.

On the November 16th game, UK played Miami, OH is a nail-biter that came down to a last-second clutch shot by John Wall. A Miami, OH player tied the record for most 3-point shots against Kentucky in Rupp Arena, and everyone was on the edge of their seat to see if Kentucky could pull through. Being that it was my first game I had shot, there was definitely a bit of a learning curve, but the experience I had from shoot Sweet 16 helped. I knew the camera settings, so it was all about following the ball with the lens and firing off some photos at the right moments. Here are some of the shots from that game.

This past Friday, New Found Glory was in Newport, KY at the Southgate House. I have a friend from the area so I decided to go, and was lucky enough to get a photo pass to shoot the show. Having never been to the Southgate House or seen New Found Glory or any of their opening bands live, I had no idea of what to expect, but knew it would be a great show. I got there early to get a nice spot on the floor in the middle of the crowd, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Before long, Suicide Pact took the stage, a local hardcore band that kick-started the crowd. Like the eye of a tornado, a mosh pit developed around me and I found myself not only challenged to get the shots I wanted, but to keep from falling over. Aside from some close calls and a targeted tackle, the shooting went pretty smoothly and I was able to get some shots I am pleased with. Below are some of the shots of Suicide Pact. To view them all, check out the set on my Flickr.

Following Suicide Pact was a Floridian alternative punk band, Fallen From the Sky. While their guitar riffs were heavy, and some hardcore influence could be heard in the vocals, they were quite the step down in intensity from the previous band. They seemed to have a much more polished sound. You could tell they felt comfortable on the stage, and that reflected in their music and attitude. They definitely have the makings of a good band, and are probably on the rise. Below are some of my photos of Fallen From the Sky. If you want to check them all out, you can view the set on my Flickr.

Leaning more toward punk and away from alternative, Title Fight took the stage next and got the crowd energized and involved. Since there was no barricade between the stage and the crowd, people were constantly climbing their way onto the stage before performing a stage dive back into the pulsing crowd below. Title Fight put on a great set and more than made up for any vocal shortcomings with some amazing guitar and bass skills. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t like the vocals were horrible, but more so that the music overshadowed them. Below are some of my shots of Title Fight I was able to snap in between stage divers overhead.
Topping off the night was New Found Glory, who had just recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary of their first album, ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay.’ Their stage, much like their newest music video, was zombie themed. Blood splatter and chainsaw designs were scattered throughout to add accents to the stage. As they lit up the set with one great song after the next, the crowd began to pulse and ripple like waves, and it became clear that everyone there was either a big New Found Glory fan already, or becoming one. Although from a photography standpoint, their set was probably the most challenging due to all the crowd movement, it was unquestionably the highlight of the night and created the most energy from everyone. Below are some of the photos I captured during their set.
It was definitely an awesome night with four great bands I would highly recommend checking out. As hard as it was, I had a blast shooting the show, and if anything, the challenge made it that much more enjoyable. My thanks goes out to Brian and Chad Gilbert for hooking me up with a photo pass to the show, which I’m happy I was able to go to.

It’s that time again. The college basketball season is getting ready to start and each school is looking to build excitement for their program and optimism for their season. The University of Kentucky is no different, but while most schools host a small group for their midnight madness, UK packs Rupp Arena with around 20,000 people for what is appropriately named “Big Blue Madness.” Since my day job is at said venue, which is where the Men’s Basketball team plays all their home games, I got approved for a season photo pass to shoot the games [pinches self]. Needless to say, I am VERY excited about the upcoming season. Below are some of the shots I took at Big Blue Madness this last Friday.

It was October 7th and I heard that the next day was supposed to have decent weather so I thought why not try to arrange a last minute shoot to take advantage of it. I caught Kim on Facebook chat, who I actually did one of my first model shoots with back in June. She was feeling spontaneous as well, so we made plans to meet up and take some photos in downtown Lexington. Well, as it turned out, the weather the next day was horrible and [unknown to me since I work in an office with no windows] it was raining all day. I began watching the weather and we decided to chance it. As it turned out, the rain cleared up, but there was no lack of overcast clouds. We drove down to a very sketchy neighborhood that I had spotted and found some train tracks and train cars, which is where we took our first set of photos. Below are some of the shots from that location. To view them all, check out the Train Tracks set on my Flickr.

Before my car got stolen or had it’s windows bashed in, we decided to walk back to where I parked and go to the next [possibly even shadier] location. We drove back down a street we passed on the way to tracks and found a few houses that looked awesome, and at the same time pretty dangerous. One house was about to fall down, another looked like a tornado hit it and was in shambles on the ground, and the next was boarded up and consumed by vines. We didn’t have a lot of light left so we hurried over to get some shots around that area while trying to avoid getting tetanus. Below are a few of the photos from the second location. Not only do they have one of the longest names for a band I have seen, but they also put on one of the best shows I have been to at Buster’s this last Saturday night. Opening for Today the Moon was the high energy rock-a-billy meets alternative band, Varsovia. As they announced during their set, it was actually Varsovia’s last gig as a group, which was definitely unfortunate since they put on a good show.
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun hit the stage not long after Varsovia finished their set. They had a unique setup, in that the lead singer also played rhythm guitar and keyboard, while the bassist also played keyboard and was a backup singer. It worked out really well and a added a variety of sounds to each of their songs. The lead guitarist seems to break into spontaneous solos which usually consisted of feedback created by the amps or pedals, and really added a dynamic intensity to the songs. The drummer did his part and added a lot of explosive lines to the songs that seemed to round everything out. Below are some of the photos I took during their set.
